When do you need to transfer your domain name?
You will need a domain name transfer if your current domain name registration provider doesn't allow access to edit the domain settings/DNS records. GoSite needs access to your domain settings in order to push your website live.
Transferring your domain from your current provider to GoSite
The easiest way to have your domain transferred is to ask your current domain name registration provider for a domain transfer authorization code - also called an EPP transfer code. Once GoSite receive's the EPP transfer code, it will take approximately 7 days for your domain to transfer over. Keep reading to learn how to find your domain name provider and give GoSite access to your domain settings!
-
Go to lookup.icann.org to find out your domain name registration provider. Input your domain name into the search field and press the "Lookup" button.
(Note: this search will not work if "www." is in front of your domain name. When searching, make sure the format is as follows: domainexample.com.)
-
Scroll down to "Registrar Information." Next to "Name" you will find your domain provider.
-
Send the following email template (marked in bold below) to your current domain provider (company from step 2) to obtain the domain transfer authorization code (EPP transfer code). Be sure to put your domain and name in the { } marked below:
Hi there,
I would like a domain transfer authorization code to transfer my domain, {INSERT YOUR DOMAIN HERE}, from your company to my current one. Please ensure the domain is unlocked and ready to be transferred. Thank you.
Thank you,
{INSERT YOUR NAME}
Once the previous company sends you the domain transfer authorization code (EPP code), send an email to webteam@gosite.com with the following information to initiate the transfer to GoSite (this could take up to 7 days):
- First and Last Name
- Name of your company
- Email address that you use to log into GoSite
- The name of the domain you are transferring
- The EPP/Authorization code that you received from your previous domain company
Note: There is a $12 one-time transfer fee to transfer your domain name to GoSite, along with a $20 recurring annually registration fee. So you will be charged $32 upon the completion of the transfer, and then $20 every year after that.
Do you want to be in full control of your domain name registration & DNS settings?
If you would like to control your own domain name, then it is recommended that you transfer your domain name to a 3rd party Domain Name Registration provider. Instructions will vary depending on the provider.
This might be a useful option if you want to control your own domain/DNS settings and the payment of your domain. This option will also prevent you from having to transfer your domain again in the future.
Note: If you have domain-based emails (ie hello@yourdomainname.com), you will need to keep them with your current provider or create your own emails. GoSite will maintain the correct records needed so your emails stay intact with your provider.
